PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

Become proficient in speaking English in the workplace and get the job that you want!  This program provides an extremely important tool in acquiring success in the business world today, emphasizing medical and educational terminology.

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Students of this program will acquire the English proficiency they need in order to use the knowledge, training and/or experience they already have. Through this intensive and fast paced program, the students enhance their language skills, to successfully function in the community and the job market.  It integrates life skills topics, functions, and grammar to motivate the participant to advance his/her learning.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

-         SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1This program admits only professionals from other countries who need instruction in English in order to use the knowledge, training, or skills they already have.

-        Applicants are interviewed by the Admissions Department in order to mutually determine whether the program meets the needs of the applicant.  

-        Applicants must show adequate proof of completion of postsecondary education.

BEGINNER 1 Course

Course Description

This is an introductory beginner’s course designed to assist Speakers of Other Languages in developing the ability to understand and to express themselves correctly in simple everyday situations using English Language. The course provides a fast-paced introduction to English with an emphasis on speaking, pronunciation, and listening skills. New grammar and vocabulary will be presented in the context of relevant themes and topics. The course also assists students in developing basic grammar, spelling, and sentence structures skills.

The alphabet; greetings and leave-takings; names and titles of address; phone numbers; possessions; classroom objects; personal items; locations in a room; cities and countries; adjectives of personality and appearance; numbers and ages; clothing; colors; weather and seasons; clock time; times of the day; everyday activities; transportation; family relationships; daily routines; days of the week; houses and apartments; rooms; furniture; jobs and workplaces.

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Course Objective and Description

This course covers English at a low intermediate level.  Students will continue to work on their oral communication skills and emphasis will be placed on reading comprehension and writing production skills.  Upon completion of the course, students will be able to have more complex conversations about themselves, their relationships and the world.

Food pyramid; basic foods, desserts; meals; sports; abilities and talents; months and dates; birthdays, holidays, festivals and special occasions; parts of the body; health problems and advice; medications; stores and things you can buy; tourist attractions; weekend; chores and fun activities; vacations; summer activities; biographical information; years; school days; locations; telephone calls; invitations; going out with friends.

 

 

ESOL 1 Course                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              
11 credits – 120 hours

 

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Course Objective and Description

This course will bring students to the intermediate level of English.  An increased emphasis will be placed on the written language.  Students will learn the basics of academic and business written correspondence.  Upon completion of the course, students will be able to communicate effectively with native English speakers about their personal backgrounds, opinions, and ideas.

Introductions and greetings; names, countries and nationalities; jobs, workplaces and school; academic and business written correspondence; daily schedules; clock time; shopping and prices; clothing and personal items; colors and material; music, movies and TV programs; entertainers; invitations and excuses; dates and times; families; sports, fitness activities and exercise; routines; free-time and weekend activities; chores, vacations; stores and places in a city; neighborhoods; houses and apartments.

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Course Objective and Description

This course covers English at a high intermediate level. In this course, students will review topics about their personal backgrounds, opinions and ideas, and will continue to increase their focus on business and academic English. At the end of the course they will be able to write different kinds of letters and essays.

Appearance and dress; clothing and clothing styles; people; past experiences; unusual activities; cities, hometowns and countries; health problems; medications and remedies; products in a pharmacy; food and restaurants; world geography and facts; countries; invitations and excuses; leisure-time activities; telephone messages; letters and essays; life changes; plans and hopes for the future.

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Course Objective and Description                                                

This course brings students to the advanced level of ESOL and includes extensive writing practice.  Students will increase their fluidity in conversations and reduce errors in both spoken and written English.  Reading and listening practice will increasingly consist of authentic materials from "real-life" situations. The course will also allow the students to develop the ability to evaluate, describe and support personal opinions by integrating listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

ESOL 4 Course                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               
11 credits – 120 hours

 

 SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1Course Objective and Description                        

This course covers advanced ESOL topics for professionals in both academic and business environments.  At the end of the course, students will be able to hold conversations with native English speakers on any topic, read and write essays and reports, give and understand lectures and presentations. The course will also help students develop the required abilities to describe, evaluate, interpret, speculate, support personal opinions and report what other people say. Reading and listening practice will be supported by authentic materials (radio and TV broadcasts; essays, journal and magazine articles written for native speakers).

Life in the past, present and future; changes and contrasts; consequences; abilities and skills; job preferences; personality traits; careers; landmarks and monuments; world knowledge; information about someone’s past; recent past events; entertainment; movies and books; reactions and opinions; entertainment; movies and books; reactions and opinions; non verbal communication; gestures and meaning; signs; drawing conclusions; money; hopes; predicaments; speculations; requests; excuses, invitations.
